There are a number of websites offering free classified ads, the Metropolis probably being the best known one. Other good classified sites include Japan Update, Jobs in Japan, Classifieds Japan, Gaijinpot and Nihon Classifieds.

Some classified sites have different focuses. The Japan Times which runs The Japan Times Classified site, traditionally focused on newspaper classified ads, has a decent jobs section but not much else. The Japan Times recently combined their classifieds and jobs into the classified section.

Another very good resource is Craigs List, which seems to have recently expanded and has more depth than some of the other classified sites.
